My boyfriend wants to travel from algeria to the uk?

I live in the uk (british citizen) and my boyfriend is an algerian living in algeria. He wants to come visit me in the uk but he told me i need to send him an invitation so he can apply for his visa. Is this true and how would i go about doing this?
