Is beeswax a safe finish for a wooden mug that will hold alcoholic beverages?

Also, how often would it have to be rewaxed. Or is there a better finish I could use? I've heard of using epoxy, polyurethane, brewer's pitch, mineral oil and other oils. Preferably I would like a hard finish but I'm not sure how safe a hard finish would be.
