Does reading actually make you smarter?

Reading does make you think harder such as in All I lay is dying, the DaVinci Code, and the Great Gatsby which all have cryptic inner meanings which are about a fallen society. I actually think novels and mysteries make you think critically but not actually make you smarter because a lot of times they are based on fiction and only from the Writer's Perspective. I actually textbooks and experience with issues make us wiser and more discerning. I really hope that is what you mean as for as smart.
